Follow Tokyo’s autumn color from the mountains to ginkgo avenues and garden evenings, with a week by week plan for 2026.
Last updated
Ginkgo avenues turn gold, maples color the old gardens, and evening openings light the trees after dark. Going out to see the changing leaves is called momijigari, and in Tokyo the color reaches the western mountains first and the city gardens a few weeks later. Start with your travel week, then choose a mountain day, a ginkgo walk or a garden evening. The weeks are starting points, not separate seasons, and a place listed earlier may still have color when the next group begins. The dates below are when Weathernews expects good viewing to begin, checked on October 22, 2026. The Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) forecasts the city as a whole, not single gardens. Mitake Gorge uses a typical seasonal window, Todoroki Valley uses the temple above it, and the evening openings have their own dates.
Plan Your Outing
19 spots in 3 areas
6 locations·JR Ome Line (Okutama, Mitake, Nishi-Tachikawa) and JR Nishi-Hachioji
Start with the western outings if you are visiting in mid November. Mount Mitake and Mitake Gorge share JR Mitake Station, so they make one day out if you leave daylight for the river path. Lake Okutama needs a separate bus ride from JR Okutama Station. Mount Takao turns earlier, from around November 9, and should still have color this week before its leaves start to fall around November 26. Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa holds its Autumn Night Walk from October 29 to November 29, so it also works before and after this week. Koishikawa Korakuen in Bunkyo opens at night from November 13 to 24, ahead of its own leaves, and is listed in the final week.

2 locations·Gaienmae and Tokyu Komazawa-daigaku
This week moves into the city, starting with the ginkgo and zelkova at Komazawa. The Gaien ginkgo avenue runs later than this week suggests. JMC’s citywide Tokyo ginkgo forecast is November 26, while Weathernews puts the avenue itself around November 29, so plan for late November into early December.

11 locations·Komagome, Iidabashi, Kiyosumi-shirakawa and Shinjuku-gyoenmae
This week offers the largest choice of parks and gardens in this guide, from central Tokyo out to Kokubunji and Musashino. Several gardens are forecast to reach good viewing in early December, and their season may continue beyond this planner’s final week. For a longer garden day, visit Kyu-Furukawa by day and Rikugien in the evening, buying Rikugien’s separate night ticket. Most metropolitan gardens run autumn programs until December 6, and six of the gardens here share a stamp rally ending the same day.

Check Again Before You Go
Forecasts move during the season, often by a day or two at a time. Check the Weathernews page for your chosen spot in the week you visit, then look at its latest color report before setting out. JMC issued forecasts on September 2 and October 1 and plans its next for early November.
Book the Evening You Want
Koishikawa Korakuen sells advance night tickets online until November 12. Rikugien limits numbers each day and had not announced its sale date by October 21. Showa Kinen sells its Japanese Garden supplement from seven days before your visit.
Plan Garden Visits Before 16:30
The metropolitan gardens open 9:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, and they open on Mondays. Shinjuku Gyoen closes at 16:30 from October and is usually shut on Mondays, except November 1 to 15 and on Monday holidays, closing the next weekday instead. Rikugien and Koishikawa Korakuen close at 17:00 and reopen at 18:00 on their night-opening days.
Collect Stamps Across Nine Gardens
The nine metropolitan gardens run an autumn stamp rally from October 10 to December 6. Pick up a sheet at any of them while supplies last and collect one stamp per garden. Rikugien, Koishikawa Korakuen, Kiyosumi, Kyu-Furukawa, Hamarikyu and Tonogayato in this guide all take part.
Check the Last Cable Car
If you use the cable cars, check the last return service before setting out. Mitake’s rail approach also involves a bus from JR Mitake Station.
JMC’s October 1 forecast puts Tokyo ginkgo at November 26 and maple at November 28, both close to an average year. Weathernews expects good viewing at Mount Takao from around November 9, elsewhere in western Tokyo from around November 16 to 20, and in several city gardens from around December 2 to 5. These are starting dates, and color can continue for some time after them.
In western Tokyo. Mount Takao is forecast first, from around November 9. Lake Okutama, Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa and Mount Mitake follow between November 16 and 18, about two weeks ahead of several gardens in central Tokyo.
Showa Kinen Park runs its Autumn Night Walk from October 29 to November 29. Koishikawa Korakuen opens at night from November 13 to 24, and Rikugien from November 25 to December 6. Rikugien and Koishikawa require night tickets. At Showa Kinen, only the Japanese Garden needs a supplement.
Not for ordinary daytime admission, where you pay at the gate or walk in free. Some garden activities, such as the Kyu-Furukawa fragrance workshop, need advance application. For the night openings, Koishikawa Korakuen and Rikugien sell cheaper advance tickets online and limit numbers, and the Showa Kinen Japanese Garden supplement goes on sale seven days ahead.
Yes. The avenue is a public street with no ticket. Weathernews lists any 2026 illumination there as undecided, and notes scaffolding on the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery at the far end until about the end of May 2027.
Yes. Setagaya City reopened the riverside path on March 24, 2026. It is narrow and partly unlit, so visit in daylight.
From each organizer’s page, read October 21, 2026.

Eleven core stops from an 8:00 breakfast to the last bar, built around Shibuya Sky at sunset. About 3.5 km of walking, four stops that cost nothing, and two optional food stops if the day runs long.
